CIC pocket lane not feasible

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu City Traffic Operations management cannot grant the request of the Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion to establish a pocket lane right at the exit of the school as it would hamper traffic flow.

Traffic operations officers Jeffrey Llauderes and Rosario Dosdos explained that vehicles heading for Lahug will have to slow down upon approaching the pocket lane thereby affecting the traffic flow.“In effect, traffic jam may occur thereat during rush hours of the day,” the two traffic officers said after conducting an ocular inspection in the area.

CITOM executive officer Rafael Christopher Yap said the present traffic volume along Gorordo Avenue is considered heavy. This is the reason vehicles are not allowed to stop in front of the school.

A study showed that if a jeepney pocket lane will be installed, it has to be constructed a few meters from the school’s exit and the design must keep the rear of the jeepney from blocking the main road.

The school’s concrete fence also needs to be moved and the trees along the fence must be earth-balled for replanting elsewhere.

The school officials earlier asked CITOM to allow the installation of a pocket lane near their exit gate because the parents of their school children are requesting it so they will not have to walk far to get a ride.

The nearest jeepney stop from the school’s exit is located near the junction of Cardinal Rosales Avenue, which is about 50 meters away. (FREEMAN)
