Pa, 2 minor sons nabbed for hacking neighbor to death

- Ria Mae Y. Booc - The Philippine Star

CEBU, Philippines - A farmer was hacked to death by his neighbor and the latter’s two minor sons in Barangay Dumlog, Toledo City yesterday morning due to their wives’ previous quarrel.

Simeon Edoloverio Jr., 43, died on the spot due to multiple hack wounds in different parts of his body.

Edoloverio was reportedly on his way to take his goat to a grassy area a few meters away from his residence when he was waylaid by Benigno Caburnay, 44, who was with his sons aged 14 and 16.

PO3 Henry Acosta, Toledo City police investigator, said that suspects who were armed with bladed weapons suddenly attacked Edoloverio.

Benigno reportedly used a scythe, his 14-year-old son had a bolo and the 16-year-old was also armed with a hunting knife.

When the police arrived, the suspects voluntarily surrendered and turned over their bladed weapons.

“Puro man pud sila nanug-an nga sila maoy nakasala,(They all admitted the crime.)” Acosta said in a phone interview.

Acosta said Edoloverio’s live-in partner, Bernadette Quimada, and Benigno’s wife, Merlyn Caburnay, reportedly had a fight one day prior to the incident.

“Nagbugno gyud ning duha tungod sa mga tabi-tabi nga dunay kabit ang usa (Caburnay)(Both had a catfight because of rumors that Caburnay had a lover.),” Acosta said.

Both were scheduled to have a confrontation at the barangay hall today but it will no longer push through due to the incident.

Supt. Henry Biñas, Toledo City police chief, said a murder case is being prepared against Benigno, while his two other sons were turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

Police said they are yet to ascertain if both acted with discernment during the crime.— (FREEMAN)
