Consumer group wants fare rollback
CEBU, Philippines - A consumer group yesterday filed a petition before the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board-7 (LTFRB) for a rollback in the minimum jeepney fare by P1.50.
“I am very positive that LTFRB will immediately take action on our request ,” said Vicente Sapio, president of the Consumers Rights and Economic Welfare (CREW).
At least 2,000 consumers signed the petition. But Sapio said they received thousands of emails from supporters who could not physically affix their signatures on the document.
“Gasoline prices have gone down and the public also wants a rollback in the fare,” he said.
He pointed out that unleaded gasoline is now P10 cheaper than last month’s P55 per liter.
LTFRB approved the provisional fare rate increase of P0.50 from the minimum fare of P7.50 last March because of high oil prices.
Drivers are allowed to collect P8 for the first five kilometers but students and senior citizens are entitled to a 20 percent discount, which means they will only pay P6.50. (FREEMAN)
