CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Education's National Schools Maintenance Week, also known as Brigada Eskwela Week, kicked off yesterday with several government agencies, private corporations, parents and students extending their help as public schools prepare for the opening of classes on June 4."Very successful gyud ang atoang launching. Nitabang gyud ang tanan, (Our launching was very successful. Everybody helped.)" said Clara Falconi, DepEd-7 media information officer.
She said that all stakeholders prepared for the event which will end this Friday.
DepEd assistant secretary Elena Ruiz launched the event at Naga Elementary School along with other DepEd-7 officials. They then proceeded to Talisay Elementary School, Mabolo Elementary School in Cebu City, Mandaue City Central School, Lapu-Lapu City Elementary School, Liloan Central School and Danao Elementary and High Schools.
First District Representative Eduardo Gullas also graced the occasion in Naga Elementary in Naga City, Cebu.
Brigada Eskwela is a school maintenance program that engages all education stakeholders to contribute their time, effort and resources in ensuring that public school facilities are set in time for the school opening.
Education Secretary Armin Luistro, in his memorandum no.56 series of 2012, said that this year, partners are encouraged to support the improvement of toilets and wash facilities as part of DepEd's effort to strengthen awareness on the importance of hygiene and sanitation among students.
Luistro also encouraged the improvement of schools for indigenous communities. (FREEMAN)
