Man sets neighbor's house on fire

- Ria Mae Y. Booc -

CEBU, Philippines - The police have arrested a laborer in San Fernando for setting his neighbor’s house on fire last Saturday.

Ricardo Cañas, 48, resident of Barangay South Poblacion is now detained at the San Fernando police station while a criminal complaint for arson is being prepared against him.

Cañas was arrested shortly before noon Saturday after setting Maximino Cocope’s house on fire. Witnesses told the police that the suspect lighted the victim’s nipa hut at about 11:00 a.m.

The house was razed leaving a total damage of P15,000.

Police Officer 1 Janel Figura said they immediately responded to the alarm and found the suspect drunk.

The victim said he could not recall having any personal grudge with the suspect.

Cañas believes that the influence of liquor may have driven the suspect to commit the crime and not because of any personal motive against him. — (FREEMAN)
