MCWD readies P75M water project for Bacayan

CEBU, Philippines - Residents of Barangay Bacayan will soon enjoy the water supply that they have been longing from the Metropolitan Cebu Water District.

This after the MCWD management has allocated P75 million to start supplying water in Bacayan.

MCWD engineering department manager Raul Tabasa said the barangay officials and residents were given an assurance that the water supply will be ready by September next year.

The P75 million project and the detailed design is now ready, Tabasa said, adding that publication and bidding will take around three months and the awarding of the project to the winning bidder is expected at the end of the year.

Tabasa said that by January next year, the implementation phase will start and the target date of completion is September. Aside from Bacayan, the water district will also cater to Barangay Pit-os as they expect 12,000 cubic meter of water supply a day.

The supply will be sourced out from their two existing bulk water suppliers and from their pumping station in Talamban.

Bacayan is home to a number of subdivisions where residents also complained of water supply problems.

Tabasa, however, explained that MCWD cannot supply water to subdivision residents unless the developer or the homeowners’ associations will turn-over their water system to MCWD.

The developers also have the option to have a bulk water supply agreement with MCWD, which means that MCWD will supply water to the subdivision but the developer will handle the distribution of water to the different households.

The developer has the discretion to impose different rates on the consumers within the subdivision as they are the ones handling the distribution. (FREEMAN)
