Rotary donates books to city government

CEBU, Philippines - The Rotary Club of Cebu-West and the Rotary Club of Singapore-West donated about 50,000 children books, magazines and other reading materials to the Cebu City government.

The books, mostly for elementary and high school students, were received by Cebu City Vice Mayor Joy Augustus Young at the Zapatera Elementary School.

Young said the Zapatera Elementary School and Gothong National High School – which are called the Library Hubs in the north district and south district, respectively – serve as reservoirs of reading materials by the Department of Education.

He said the books will be distributed to all public elementary and high schools in the city. The donation was established through the effort of DepEd, the city and RCCW.

The program provides public school students greater access to reading materials in order to develop their reading and comprehension skills.

The RCCW, which also has a program called Books across the Seas, donated 30,000 books to the city.

Cebu City Schools Division Superintendent Rhea Mar Angtud said the books and facilities donated by RCCW and the city government “will go a long way.”

Young thanked the rotary for its continued assistance to the DepEd.
