Dumpit's lawyers ask more time to submit pleadings

CEBU, Philippines - The lawyers of beleaguered police officer Adonis Dumpit are asking more time to file a supplemental motion on their earlier petition seeking to recuse Regional Trial Court Judge Ester Veloso from the murder case against their client.

Lawyers Pedro Leslie Salva and Benjamin Militar are asking for five days extension to file their supplemental motion. This is on top of the first five days extension that ended yesterday.

According to the defense counsels, they need more time to gather evidence to support their grounds in seeking for the inhibition of Veloso. Salva and Militar said their asking for another extension is done in good faith and is not intended to delay the prompt disposition of the incident and of the case.

Dumpit, who is accused of murder for shooting to death a suspected robber in 2004, sought Veloso’s inhibition from his case after the latter denied his motion to transfer detention.

Dumpit wanted to be transferred from the Cebu City Jail to another facility citing security reasons. He believes that his security is at stake if he continues to be detained at the city jail because of the several criminal elements that he has arrested before. (FREEMAN)
