CCTV camera at bridge foils suicide attempt

CEBU, Philippines - A man who is experiencing financial woes wanted to end his life by attempting to jump off the Mandaue-Mactan bridge midday yesterday, but police personnel who saw his actions through the CCTV camera were just in time to stop him.

The man was identified as Leon Payola, 58, a resident of V. Rama Avenue in Cebu City.

His eldest daughter, Marissa, told The FREEMAN that her father left their house at 10am yesterday. The only thing they reportedly knew was that he went on a taxi bound for the North Reclamation Area.

They reportedly tried to locate him but failed until they were informed that Leon had attempted to jump off the bridge.

She said her father is experiencing financial woes because the members of group that he heads, the Taboan Kargadores Association, have reportedly failed to pay their obligations to the association.

"Naproblema gayud siya pag-ayo sa ilang kahugpongan," Marissa said.

She said that her father also tried to jump off the bridge in 2008, but was rescued by motorists.   (FREEMAN NEWS)
