CEBU, Philippines - Barangay Basak Pardo topped this year’s search for outstanding barangay peace and order council, besting 79 other barangays in Cebu City.
In second and third place are Barangays Mabolo and Adlaon, respectively. This year is the third year of the search.
Basak Pardo barangay Captain Dave Tumulak received the ceremonial check amounting to P150,000 from City Councilor Augustus Pe, chairman of the City Council’s committee on public safety. Barangay Mabolo received P100,000 while Adlaon received P50,000.
The awarding ceremony was held yesterday at the Sinulog Hall of the Public Library. Also present in the event were Department of Interior and Local Government – Cebu City Director Patricio Gabuya, City Councilor Sisinio Andales and former Cebu City North District Representative Raul del Mar.
The other barangays in the top 10 are Apas, Cogon Ramos, Sto. Niño, Bacayan, Binaliw, Quiot and Talamban. The 10 barangays made it to the top 10 because of their consistency in submitting reports to DILG.
Last year, Barangay Mabolo topped in the search followed by Barangay Apas and Barangay Busay.
Gabuya said barangay Basak Pardo’s strengths include constant surveillance by its tanods. Its illegal drug campaign, the latter having caught the attention of then DILG undersecretary Lito Ruiz.
Gabuya also noted the decrease of crime rate in the barangay, which is attributed to the consistent visibility of tanods.
The DILG also recognized its existing rescue group.
Pe said he is planning to divide the mountain barangays into two categories - mountain barangays and urban barangays.
“Lahi gyud ang situation sa bukid. Of course, mas minos ang crime rate sa bukid compared sa urban barangay. Mas maayo sab nga i-duha ka category, mas daghang makadaog sa premyo,” Pe said. (THE FREEMAN)
