University of the Visayas receives ship model from Kambara Kisen

CEBU, Philippines – As a symbol of trust and lasting relationship with the University of the Visayas, the Kambara Kisen Company, Tsuneishi Holdings Corp., turned over a scale model of the Tenshu Maru to the university yesterday morning at the UV main campus.

UV President Atty. Eduardo Gullas said that he was grateful for the model and the scholarship grant given to the university by Kambara.

He said that the university is very proud of their scholarship program which has helped more than 2,000 scholars since 2008.

Akio Jo, President of Kambara Kisen, turned over the model to Eduardo and Dr. Jose Gullas.

Jo said that they were very much honored to present the scale model to the university. He said that they donated the model ship as a sign of their thanks and appreciation of UV.

He said that it is a token of sincere gratitude and appreciation of the progressive and continuous support of the university for their scholarship program.

Jo is looking forward to the continuous partnership in the development of excellent Filipino marine officers and engineers.

The Tenshu Maru is the biggest capsize vessel constructed in the Philippines. It was launched last Nov. 10 by President Noynoy Aquino from the Tsuneishi shipyard in Balamban town.

Capt. Siegfred Lanticse, dean of the Maritime Department, said that the ship model is a good marketing strategy for the Maritime College because Kambara has been offering scholarship to deserving Maritime students.

Lanticse said that there are 20 students who were able to avail of the said program this year with some already serving on board the ships of Kambara.

The turnover ceremony was coordinated by the Astroship Management Inc. and Dr. Benilda Gadin, Quality Management Representative of UV.

Gadin said that they also have an ongoing scholarship program with Astroship. She said that some of their scholars are also now serving on ships owned by this company while the others are still studying.

Students who avail from the scholarship program undergo several exams including a computer-based exam. (FREEMAN)
