CEBU, Philippines – A resolution approved by the Mandaue City council, which seeks the conversion of the city into a lone district, has been sent to the committee on local government in Congress.
Lawyer Grace Andres, the deputy Secretary General of the Speaker of the House of Congress told the city council early this week that Resolution No.12-367-10, sponsored by ABC president Joy Ouano and Councilor Elstone Dabon, has reached the office of the committee.
Last August 18, the city council approved a resolution which requests both the Senate and the House of Congress through sixth district Representative Luigi Quisumbing to enact a law that would convert Mandaue City into a lone congressional district.
The resolution states that the city was created through Republic Act 5519 and was officially declared by the Department of Interior and Local Government through former Secretary Luis Santos as a highly urbanized city on February 15, 1991 after it complied with all the requirements of the law.
The city's population, approximately 340,925, appears in the resolution.
"Whereas, creating Mandaue City into a lone district will likewise address the needs of the Mandauehanons and will be given appropriate funds for the implementation of projects and programs from the national government," the resolution states. (FREEMAN)
