CEBU, Philippines – The Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers- Cebu Chapter opened their annual celebration of the Chemical Engineering Week with an educational tour yesterday at the newly built Sewage Treatment Plant in Basak, Lapu-Lapu City.

The opening salvo of their week-long activity was participated by some members of the Rotary Club Cebu-Fuente and the Junior Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers from the University of San Carlos and Cebu Institute of Technology University.

The Sewage Treatment plant, which started its operation July 26, is the first-of-its-kind facility in the Philippines directly funded by the local government unit of Lapu-Lapu City. It was designed and built by chemical engineers headed by PIChE- Cebu Chapter president Jesselito V. Baring in compliance with the provisions of the Clean Wa-ter Act or Republic Act 9297.

The treatment plant processed waste water thrown into the city-constructed culvert and uses an original local technology that is compliant with the thrust of the Department of Science and Technology.

The construction of the facility started January 2010. Newly elected officers of PIChE- Cebu Chapter and JrPIChE also took their oath yesterday following their induction.  (FREEMAN)
