Mayor Radaza to "take care" of Olango island
CEBU, Philippines – Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza suggested to hold one of its regular sessions in Olango Island's mini city hall, to eliminate the residents' feeling of being neglected.
This, she believes, will serve as a line of communication between the mainland officials to the island's constituents.
Only City Councilor Alexander Gestopa, Jr. stays in the island most days since this is part of his district. All the other councilors stay mostly in the mainland.
Last Friday was the first time that they held their regular session in Olango, discussing matters related to the island's prevailing problems including dynamite fishing and protection of marine sanctuaries.
Radaza said she wants the residents of the islet to feel that they are taken care of.
"Kon ari lang ta sa mainland, mahulog nga walay gamit ang atoang mini City Hall. Mas maayo pud nang mag session pod ta ngadto," she said.
The mayor said that she will also bring with her the different department heads in her visits to Olango so the concerns of the people there can be addressed.
Former city councilors, during the administration of former mayor and now Congressman Arturo Radaza, held session once a year at Olango Island. Before his term ended, the proposal to set up offices of each councilor at the mini City Hall surfaced.
Olango, which is composed of six barangays, has proven to be politically vital during elections. This was where Rep. Radaza was defeated by the late Mayor Ernest Weigel, Jr. in his first attempt for mayorship in 1998.
Paz said problems in the island can easily be given remedy if some of the city's officials and department heads will be staying in the island.
The island has over 50 fish wardens who acquired one new pump boat for its water patrol against illegal fishing, but Paz said she wants to know other problems and act on these immediately. (FREEMAN)
