- Mellanie Joy C. Rosales -

CEBU, Philippines – The Cebu provincial government yesterday started its week-long celebration of the Capitol's 441st founding anniversary on Friday, August 6.

A flag raising ceremony around 8 a.m. at the Capitol grounds signaled the start of the celebration. During the ceremony, the Sugbo Hymn was played and different flags of towns and cities in the province were raised by the provincial mayors.

An agri-fair then opened at the back of the Capitol building where products from different towns and cities were displayed. A photo exhibit was also held highlighting the past six years of the government.

On Friday, the day of the anniversary, a Mass will held at 10 a.m. and a program, including the awarding of the best booth, will be held at 1:30 p.m.

Included in the activities are the Governor's Ball and Garbo sa Sugbo Awards on Saturday, and a gift shop and a media gallery at the Museo Sugbo and job fair at Cebu International Convention Center on Sunday.

On August 11, the Capitol will inaugurate a coffee shop and gift shop in Oslob Cuarte at the Oslob Church. The coffee shop will sell native coffees and food to the public.

The Pasigarbo sa Sugbo Festival of Festivals 2010 will be held on August 14 at the CICC. The street dancing will start at 1 p.m. while the grand showdown will start at 6 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Capitol has partnered with the Cebu Normal University (CNU) and Cebu Technological University in establishing a scholarship program for honor students.

Under the program, which started last year, the two schools will give a four-year full scholarship to valedictorians in the province.

The program includes opportunity of students to work at the Capitol during summer. (THE FREEMAN)
