Public hearing set for ordinance that bans motorbikes, hikers in SRP tunnel

CEBU, Philippines - The proposed ordinance that prohibits motorcycle riders and pedestrians from passing through the tunnel that connects the South Road Properties to Mc Arthur Boulevard is scheduled for public hearing on August 20.

Councilor Edgardo Labella, chairman of the committee on laws and ordinances of the Cebu City Council, is inviting all interested parties to attend the hearing and make their voices heard.

Labella is especially calling on the motorcycle owners and those people who might be affected by the proposed ordinance to interact with them.

Councilor Roberto Cabarrubias has proposed an ordinance to ban motorcycle riders and pedestrians from using the tunnel to avoid accidents.

In his proposed ordinance, Cabarrubias wants violators to be reprimanded for the first offense, then a fine of P1,000 for the second offense and P10,000 for succeeding offenses.

Cabarrubias said he is expecting the motorists passing through the tunnel to drive fast which could be very dangerous to motorcycles and pedestrians.

His expectation however is contrary to the 70-kilometer per hour speed limit signage posted before the tunnel. At present, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) personnel continue to install additional safety measures inside the tunnel including exhaust fans to extract the fumes from the vehicle engines.

A traffic enforcer will be assigned in both ends of the tunnel to ensure compliance of the ordinance. (FREEMAN NEWS)
