Joavan joins values formation seminar
CEBU, Philippines - Talisay City Mayor Socrates Fernandez believes that it is not too late for his controversial adopted son, Joavan, to take the right path.
Joavan attended a values formation seminar over the weekend.
The seminar was organized by Msgr. Rommel Kintanar, parish priest of Talisay Church with the help of the staff of the Servants of Mary.
The mayor, in an interview over radio station dyRF, said that the seminar was very comprehensive and has helped Joavan realize his wrongdoings.
The mayor said that due to what he observed from Joavan after the semi nar, he will let his son attend future activities of the Oasis of Love in their city.
Fernandez said that he is considering the advice of Rep. Eduardo Gullas to put Joavan under drug rehabilitation, but this will not help in their defense of the cases filed against his son.
Mayor Fernandez said that he was advised by his friend, who is a judge, that placing Joavan under rehabilitation is like admitting that the younger Fernandez is indeed a drug user.
The mayor has vehemently denied that his son uses illegal drugs.
The mayor clarified that this does not mean he is ignoring the advice of Gullas, but he is only being careful and would like to follow the due process of law.
Joavan’s latest controversy was an incident where he allegedly pointed a gun at a certain Joe Castrodes during a traffic altercation in barangay Bulacao, Talisay City.
Joavan is now facing charges for grave threats, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and violation of the gun ban.
Police found in Joavan’s sports utility vehicle, an Isuzu Bighorn, a .45 caliber pistol with live ammunition, two magazines, a black holster and some personal items during a search done last June 5.
A separate case may be filed against the mayor for obstruction of justice when he took a small red bag from the SUV despite the fact that he was told by the police he could not do so as the vehicle was under custody while they were waiting for a search warrant to be issued. — With reports from Chester Abadilla of Banat News/NLQ (THE FREEMAN)
