CEBU, Philippines - This is the fifth year in a row that UP High School Cebu students have joined and won in the International Cyberfair Competition (gold awards in 2006, 2008, 2009, and honorable mention in 2007). Finally, this time, UP High wins the highest and topmost award — Platinum.
This year, with the Cyberfair theme of “Believe and Unite”, the students decided to feature a cause very dear to their hearts, saving their alma mater, and hence came up with this project entitled: “Defending the Gateway of the Poor <http://www.uphighschoolcebu.com/>”. Their entry was submitted under Category 3: Business and Community Organizations.
Through their entries in the Cyberfair competition, the students of UP High School Cebu have promoted not only Information Technology in education but also Cebu’s local culture featuring topics such as Calles de Cebu, Tuba, and Puso.
The International Schools CyberFair is an award-winning authentic learning program used by schools and youth organizations around the world. Youth conduct research and publish their findings on the Web. Recognition is given to the best projects in each of eight categories.
This White House-endorsed program encourages youth to become ambassadors for their own local communities by working collaboratively with community members and using technology tools to publish a Web site that displays what they have learned.
The annual contest has involved more than 2.5 million students from 45,500 schools across 115 countries and is considered the longest running international cyber event of its kind.
Now in its 15th year, CyberFair has been described as the largest educational event of its kind ever held on the Internet.
Youth are challenged to publish original research projects that focus on how the positive beliefs, behaviors and contributions of their local citizens have the power to improve, preserve and unite their community.”
Because of this competition, UP High School Cebu was awarded the “Garbo sa Sugbo” by the Cebu Provincial Government during its 438th founding anniversary on 5 August 2007 for strengthening information and communication technology education. (FREEMAN NEWS)
