Lapu-Lapu holds food fest today

- Garry B. Lao -

CEBU, Philippines - Hundreds of people will look forward to this year's food festival at the Liberty Shrine, formerly know as “Mactan Shrine,” which will kick off tomorrow as part of the celebration's “Kadaugan sa Mactan.”

The food festival, which was started in 2001, is one of the highlights of the week-long activity organized by the Lapu-Lapu City government, together with the Lapu-Lapu City Tourism, Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission.

City Councilor Queenie Amman, one of the commissioners of the tourism commission, said there are about 20 hotels and restaurants that will be serving their famous dishes at discounted prices.

Amman said hotels and restaurants take part in the festival as part of their corporate social responsibility to reach out to people who fall under the lower economic bracket.

Because of the affordable prices, a lot of people look forward to the food festival, Amman said.

This also gives the participating hotels and resorts a lot of mileage and allows them to put their best foot forward to tourists.

Aside from the popular Filipino food festival, the weeklong celebration also includes a street parade, cultural exhibits, barangay pageants, games and many more.

“Kadaugan sa Mactan” is the annual celebration of Lapu-Lapu's victory over Magellan. The reenactment will fall on April 27, which is a non-working holiday for the people in the city.  (FREEMAN NEWS)
