American arrested at MCIA hospitalized

Rex Maybert Hampton, who was arrested by security personnel at the Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA), will be spending some time at a private hospital due to some illness.

Hampton, 80, was arrested by men of the Police Center for Aviation Security (PCAS) for allegedly trying to break the plane’s glass windows with his cane.

Juvelyn, Hampton’s wife, said her husband has been suffering from paranoia, adding that Hampton keeps repeating that someone wants to kill him.

Juvelyn requested the authorities the other night that her husband be brought to Chong Hua Hospital.

Police Senior Superintendent Joselito Salido, chief of PCAS-7, obliged to take Hampton to hospital but escorted by security people.

Aside from charges of malicious mischief, Salido said the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) will also file charges against Hampton for endangering passengers.

CAAP Cebu director Agnes Udang, on the other hand, said her office has already recommended the case to CAAP director general Alfonso Cusi at central office.

Last Thursday, some cabin crew and passengers tried to restrain Hampton, resulting to injury to Oscar Surban, a passenger, and the window pane of the aircraft cabin was damaged, it being struck by Hampton with his cane.

While still airborne, pilots Capt. Jesus A. Garcia and First Officer Rommel Gideon I. Enriquez requested aviation security personnel for assistance.

The pilots assured the safety of the flight was not compromised during the incident.

All other passengers safely disembarked after PR843 arrived in Cebu on schedule.

The plane, which had more than a hundred passengers, took off from Manila at 5:30 in the morning the other day.
