Had enough of poverty? Grandpa hangs self

CEBU, Philippines - A 61-year-old grandfather, who was reportedly heard a couple of times swearing he would commit suicide having lived a life of extreme poverty since childhood, was found hanging from the ceiling of his house last Saturday dawn in barangay Sabang, Danao City.

Artemio Almacin, a carpenter by trade, was found by his family hanging lifeless past 1 a.m.

Investigation showed that the body was discovered by Almacin’s 10-year-old son who just came from a benefit dance in their barangay.

Almacin tied a rope around his neck with the other end bound around a beam.

The family was shocked of the incident because before they headed for the disco several meters away from their house, Almacin even asked from them a bottle of beer as what he has reportedly been used to doing.

Initial investigation showed that whenever Almacin gets drunk, he would often mention to his family that he would be ending his life as he could no longer bear the agony of being poor.

SPO4 Jose Salingua, Jr. of the Danao City Police Station said that Almacin was left alone at that time and, perhaps having had a drink, was consumed by his personal concerns or his financial woes.

The body will be subjected to an autopsy though police confirmed it bore no external injuries or any indication of foul play. — Niña G. Sumacot/MEEV (THE FREEMAN)
