CEBU, Philippines - Some doctors at the Cebu City Medical Center reportedly believe that the hospital’s performance will “greatly improve” once Vice Mayor Michael Rama will be elected as mayor of Cebu City.
The doctors also reportedly would like to have the mayor’s wife, Margot, head the City Council’s committee on health and hospital services if she would be elected as city councilor. The committee is currently being chaired by Councilor Christopher Alix who will no longer seek reelection.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, one of the doctors said, “Nagtoo mi nga palamboon gyud ni vice mayor ang hospital kay supak man siya nga sirad-an ang ospital.”
Rama, for his part, said he will do his best to improve the performance of CCMC should he win as mayor. He said he is eyeing of increasing the hospital’s budget, particularly for the purchase of drugs and medicines and hiring of additional personnel.
Margot said her main priority right now is to win the election. Osmeña said it is up to his wife to heed the call to head the committee, albeit saying, “Why plant your best seed in poor soil?”
Political observers say it will not be a steep climb for Margot and that she might even be the number 1 councilor. Margot and Ronald Cuenco are replacing incumbent Councilors Gerardo Carillo and Arsenio Pacaña as bets of the Bando Osmeña – Pundok Kauswagan for councilors in the city’s south district.
Rama had taken the challenge of supervising the operations of the 48-year-old hospital, but Osmeña wanted the hospital closed because of its poor performance.
Osmeña said he can successfully improve the services at CCMC only if the Civil Service Commission would allow him to terminate the present “bad employees”. — Rene U. Borromeo/JMO (FREEMAN NEWS)
