Several liquor stores violate city ordinance

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu City government has been asked to intensify its campaign against business establishments selling any kinds of liquor without permits, and most especially if they are selling the products to minors.

This after it was found out that several establishments selling liquor products are operating without the necessary permits or operating near the schools.

Frederick T. Rivera, consultant of Mayor Tomas Osmeña for revenue generation, has strongly recommended for the creation of a task force or liquor enforcement unit that will monitor, inspect, apprehend and penalize establishments that violate the provisions of City Ordinance 1413.

In his report to Osmeña, Rivera said among the violators of the city liquor regulatory ordinance are Easy Buy Convenience Store along F. Ramos, Beat disco bar on General Maxilom, Elsie Sing-along and Bakak Restobar that are situated near the University of San Carlos.

Acting city treasurer Ofelia Oliva has encouraged the public to report to her office any establishment operating in the city without business permit, including liquor permit.

Rivera said the Easy Buy Convenience Store on F. Ramos is only allowed to sell foreign and domestic liquor, but has no permit to serve the products to its customers.

Meanwhile, the Beat disco bar is selling liquor to minors even during class hours and also used the sidewalk in its business.

Rivera said the two establishments are situated within the prohibited area of 100-meter radius from Velez College of Medicine and St. Theresa’s College.

The two other establishments, Elsie Sing-along and Bakak Restobar, are located within the 100-meter radius from the University of San Carlos.

City Ordinance 1413 provides that the selling of liquor is not allowed within the 100-meter radius from any church, school, hospital and public plaza, unless if they have special permits from the mayor and they have paid P6,000 for one-year operation.

Rivera said Elsie Sing-along has no business permit to sell and serve liquor products and is also selling them to minors, aside from operating videoke sing-along system until dawn that disturbs the neighbors.
