Liloan employs 71 studes for summer job

CEBU, Philippines - At least 71 college students are now benefiting from the summer job program being offered by the Municipality of Liloan.

Giving them an income of P175 per day, the program is aimed at helping qualified students earn money in preparation for the opening of classes this June. The Municipal Council has allocated at least P50,000 for the salary of the students.

Mayor Vincent “Duke” Frasco said that those with college units had an advantage because they were presumed to be already familiar with the jobs available.

Beneficiaries are those whose parents do not earn more than P36,000 a year, Frasco said.

The mayor said the money used for the salary of these students is partly shouldered by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

The program is designed as an answer to the current global crisis and to give the students an insight on how it is to work with the government.

In the related program, the town already accepts applicants who were terminated or laid-off from work so that they can avail the financial assistance from the municipal government.

Under the program, which dubbed as Liloan Unemployment Assistance Program, the residents of the town who were recently terminated or laid off from work will receive weekly assistance.

The program, according to Frasco was designed to provide financial assistance in the form of weekly payments to constituents who have not committed any infraction against their employers but who were suddenly terminated or laid off because of the effects of the global economic meltdown on certain companies and industries.

The town have allocated P500,000 for this project as of the moment and will add more in the third quarter of this year.

Under the guidelines of the program, the terminated or laid off resident-workers must qualify such as his or her period of unemployment must not exceed three months from date of termination or lay-off.

The applicants should get certification from their previous employers ensuring that they had been connected with that particular company for at least one year and that the termination/lay-off has nothing to do with infractions committed against the company.

The applicants must also actively looking for a new job or at least undergoing three job interviews per week to qualify for this benefit. – Garry B. Lao/WAB (THE FREEMAN)
