Lava Island in Cordova town to be developed for tourism

CEBU, Philippines - The Committee on Environmental Conservation and Natural Resources of the Provincial Board headed by Board Member Victor Maambong will hold a public hearing on the proposed 60-hectare reclamation project in Lava Island, Cordova town, at 1 p.m. today at the Capitol legislative building.

The said reclamation project will have a golf course as its main tourism facility.

Also a reclamation project with an area of more or less 46 hectares is needed to develop the surrounding foreshore areas of Lava Island.

In line with the said project Cordova Mayor Adelino Sitoy was been authorized to file an application for reclamation project with Philippine Reclamation Authority for the development of Lava Island.

This after the said municipality received an unsoliticited offer to develop Lava Island from the private firm Golfsalang Phil. Inc.

The offer is advantageous to the local government and to the constituents of Cordova town through the taxes and incentives it will accrue once the project will be in place, as well as the employment opportunities.

The project also needs to be registered with the Philippine Economic Zone Authority.

Sitoy was also authorized to secure an environmental compliance certificate with the DENR for the said project and sign documents related to the conversion and development. — Johanna T. Natavio/BRP   (THE FREEMAN)
