Compostela commemorates People Power with disabled

CEBU, Philippines - Around 30 persons with disabilities joined an estimated 2,000 residents of Compostela town in yesterday’s solidarity walk that opened four days of activities in line with the town’s commemoration of the EDSA People Power Anniversary on February 25.

Compostela Mayor Ritchie Wagas said they commend the participation of persons with disabilities because they have served as inspiration to residents in the municipality.

“The disabled, especially those who have surmounted their physical handicaps, are a source of inspiration to the town. They are living examples of the values Compostelanons hold dear —the determination, perseverance and will to overcome adversities,” Wagas said.

Wagas earlier issued an executive order requiring all commercial establishments to provide a 20-percent discount to all persons with disabilities. He also declared that February 22 to 25 shall be dedicated to persons with disabilities living in the town.

Yesterday’s guest speaker, former Senator Ernesto “Boy” Herrera who himself is a polio victim, commended Compostela for the importance it gives to persons with disabilities. He also urged other local government units to adopt the programs implemented in Compostela for persons with disabilities.

“Manghinaut ako nga kining gihimo ni Mayor Ritchie Wagas sa lungsod sa Compostela mamahimong modelo sa ubang mga lungsod ug muhimo sila pagtabang sa mga tawo nga adunay problema sa panglawas,” Herrera said.

Herrera said LGUs should strengthen the implementation of existing laws that cater to persons with disabilities.

In a testimony, municipal councilor Duque Arceo whose son also has a disability, said parents should do their part to support their children who have disabilities and Herrera should be seen as an example that persons with disabilities can still achieve their dreams.

“Nakita nato nga bisan adunay problema sa panglawas, nakab-ot ni Senador Herrera ang kalambuan. Mao kini ang magiya nato sa ato usab nga mga ginikanan nga adunay mga anak nga may susama usab nga problema,” Arceo said. — Jose P. Sollano/JMO (THE FREEMAN)
