-

Cebu - An 18-year-old criminology student was arrested after bystanders mauled him for robbing a jeepney passenger of his cell phone at the corner of Osmeña Boulevard and P. Del Rosario St., Cebu City last Tuesday night.

Von Brufal, 18, a resident of Talisay City sustained injuries and bruises to the face and other parts of his body and is now detained at Parian Police station.

However, the cell phone that was owned by Edrani Selmar, 31, a resident of barangay Oprra, Cebu City was no longer recovered and was believed to have been carted away by the suspect’s companion who was able to flee when the commotion broke out.

Selmar said that Brufal and his companion, who was only identified as a certain “Daniel,” pretended as ordinary passengers. But when they reached the area near the Land Bank del Rosario branch, Daniel announced the holdup and grabbed his cell phone.

Both suspects then jumped off the vehicle and ran towards Kamagayan area.

The victim however followed the suspects and shouted for help and before he could run further, Brufal was intercepted by a group of bystanders who then mauled him while Daniel successfully fled.

Selmar sustained injuries in his arms when he resisted to give his cell phone and was brought to Chong Hua Hospital for treatment.

During an interrogation, Brufal admitted to the crime. “Gipangitaan na man ko sa akong Mama kay ako man naprenda ang cell phone wa pa ang Sinulog mao to nga napugos mi sa pagkuha atong cell phone.”

Police are now preparing the robbery with physical injuries complaint against the suspects. — Ramil V. Ayuman/WAB (THE FREEMAN)
