Man charged for trying to kill wife
Cebu - The Cebu City Prosecutor’s Office has indicted a 36-year-old man for attempted parricide after he allegedly tried to kill his wife last New Year’s day.
Elmer Legaspi, a resident of Barangay Pahina Central, was arrested by the barangay tanods in Lorega San Miguel while he was allegedly on the act of strangling his wife.
The complainant, Jocelyn Legaspi, said she was in the house of her aunt in Lorega to celebrate the New Year when at around 8 p.m., her husband arrived while she was sitting near the dining table.
The accused reportedly told her that since her birthday is coming, he wanted to give her a present that she will never forget and then he suddenly started slamming the table.
Because of that, Jocelyn said she chided her husband because it was not their house and that he could not pay for it in case of damage.
She added that she left her husband in the kitchen and walked towards the living room in time for her auntie and her cousins’ arrival.
But while she was sitting on the sofa, Jocelyn said her husband allegedly grabbed her hair and stabbed her using a kitchen knife. She was able to parry the thrust but because the accused was stronger than her, he was able to slash her face before she stumbled on the floor.
For parrying the knife, Jocelyn’s right hand was also injured.
While trying to grapple the knife she added that she was able to escape and ran outside where she cried for help.
The accused allegedly chased and strangled her but she was fortunately saved from her husband’s attempt to kill her when the barangay tanods arrived and arrested him.
The prosecutor’s office has recommended P100,000 bail for Elmer’s temporary liberty. — Fred P. Languido/WAB (THE FREEMAN)
