Janitor escapes theft charges

CEBU - No charges will be filed against the janitor who admitted stealing money from a Mandaue-based construction materials manufacturing firm after the president of the company himself said he would no longer pursue the suspect.

National Bureau of Investigation agent Reynaldo Villordon said James Yu, the president of Joyland Manufacturing Corporation, decided to no longer file a case against janitor Dindo Elim after he recovered part of the money stolen from his office.

Because of Yu’s desistance, the NBI would no longer file formal charges against Elim before the city prosecutor’s office.

Last week, the NBI was able to recover P159,000 from the P400,000 that Elim admitted he stole from Yu’s office last month.

Elim was placed under arrest last week after he cracked during an interrogation at the NBI office. He was subpoenaed for questioning but subsequently admitted to the crime after being informed that he would be subjected to a polygraph examination.

Elim then led the NBI operatives to his house at the back of Eversley Child Hospital in Mandaue City where he kept the P159,000.

Elim admitted he was not alone in the job but refused to reveal the name of his companion who kept part of the money. — Fred P. Languido/JMO (THE FREEMAN)
