Grandpa arrested for bringing guns

CEBU - Police arrested a 78-year-old man who was about to leave for Bohol with three unlicensed guns last Sunday night at Pier 1 in Cebu City.

Genaro Cortes Ibale, of barangay Sentinela, Ubay, Bohol, just arrived in Pier 1 when he was apprehended by personnel of the Waterfront Police Station who found three .45 cal. pistols on him.

Earlier, an informant from Bohol called the Waterfront police station and reported that a man with guns will be returning to Bohol on a vessel set to sail at 10 p.m.

The informant also said the man will be wearing a camouflage shirt and short pants and will be bringing a black bag, descriptions that matched the suspect.

SPO1 Manuel Margallo of the police station said as early as 8 p.m. policemen led by SPO2 Roel Hortelano arrived at the pier to find and arrest the suspect.

When they found him they searched his bags and found the guns. The suspect is now detained at the Cebu City Jail and is facing charges for illegal possession of firearms.

Police said earlier that same day Ibale brought the guns from Bohol, had them repaired in Danao and was bringing them back home when he was arrested.

“Kung ikaw magtan-aw, dili g’yud ka maka-tuo nga ang usa ka-78 anyos nga lolo magdala’g armas hinungdan nga kung dili mabantayan, makalusot g’yud kun magdala’g mga armas,” Margallo said

No bail was recommended for his release, but the court said the police may allow the suspect to avail of the probation considering his age. – Niña Chrismae G. Sumacot/BRP (THE FREEMAN)
