CEBU - Two barangay captains in Pinamungajan filed a case for violations of the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act and the Local Government Code against Mayor Geraldine Yapha over the operation of an open dumpsite in the town.
Barangay captains Edgardo Cuaycong of Pandacan and Julius Alpas of Mangoto filed the complaint against Yapha yesterday before the Office of the Ombudsman-Visayas.
Cuaycong said that sometime in December last year, he wrote a letter to Yapha asking for the closure of the municipal open dumpsite in the military reservation area in barangay Pandacan.
Cuaycong said that the barangay council also passed a resolution asking Yapha to close the open dumpsite because of its hazardous effects to the people in the barangay.
According to Cuaycong, Yapha promised that the municipal government will establish a permanent waste disposal facility in barangay Binabag, which will be consistent with the Republic Act 9003, otherwise known as the Solid Waste Management Act.
However, Cuaycong said until now, the municipal government has continued the operation of the dumpsite. He said they have already asked Yapha to implement the barangay resolution asking for the closure of the dumpsite but the request has not been acted. — Fed P. Languido/LPM (THE FREEMAN)
