Two more cases filed vs Sulpicio
The mother of a 14-year-old girl and the son of a 47-year-old woman are the latest to file charges against Sulpicio Lines Incorporated in relation to the sinking of the ill-fated MV Princess of the Stars wherein their family members were among the passengers.

Pogado said the untimely demise of her daughter Vanessa whom she said was in good health and in good standing in school, has deprived her family of possible earnings within the next 51, even 65 years, in which she was expected to live, had the ship not drowned.
Pogado, however, did not ask for a specific amount for actual damages because her daughter was a minor. Instead, Pogado asked the court to award her P800,000 in moral and exemplary damages on top of the 20 percent of the adjudged monetary award due to the complainant as attorney’s fee.
Regional Public Attorney Maria G-Ree Calinawan, who assisted the complainants, said they did not ask for actual damages because it would be presumptuous to do so considering the victim was a minor.
However, Calinawan said they will present evidence during trial for the court to determine the actual damages.
Meanwhile, Furia has asked the court to award him P1.5 million in actual damages representing the lost earnings of his 47-year old mother. The amount was computed using the American expectancy table of mortality formula.
Furia is likewise demanding P800,000 in moral and exemplary damages and 20 percent attorney’s fee.
Like the other complainants who have filed the case ahead, Furia and Pogado also signed quit claims after receiving P200,000 insurance claims. And like the other complainants, they also contended that the quit claims have no force and effect because the amount given to them did not come from the shipping company but from insurance.- Fred P.
