IN PINAMUNGAJAN: Woman shot dead for pawning lots

A 60-year-old woman was shot to death in barangay Anislag, Pinamungajan town for reportedly pawning lots without consent from her relatives.

In a report reaching the Cebu Provincial Police Office, Buenaventura Belleta, a resident of barangay Anislag, was shot by three assailants who used a firearm of undetermined caliber.

PO1 Calixto Sabellano of the Pinamungajan Police Station said that one of the suspects was positively identified by the victim’s nine-year-old granddaughter as her own uncle, Veronico Baloro, also a resident of the barangay.

According to reports, the victim had a row with her relatives over the alleged pawning of some lots without the others’ consent and even before the said disputed lots could be subdivided.

According to Belleta’s granddaughter, she and her lola were preparing supper around 5:30 p.m. last Sunday when they noticed that the dogs were barking out loud.

When she peeped through the window, she said she saw three men. The men then entered their house and shot her grandmother dead.

One of the men, who noticed that she was there, aimed the gun at her and shot her also. Fortunately, she was able to jump out of the window and run for help to the nearest neighbor.

Pinamungajan police were alerted by Anislag barangay captain Celedonio Bariga and some barangay tanods.

Police found Belleta’s body with one fatal shot on her hips.

They immediately conducted an operation that eventually led to the arrest of Baloro. — Ferliza C. Contratista/MEEV
