CHED tells schools to put up dormitories

-

The Commission on Higher Education has required schools to establish their own dormitories as part of its effort to boost services to students.

CHED wants all necessary services be catered to students in its campaign to provide quality education.

CHED education supervisor Josefino Ronquillo said they would start implementing the requirement with big schools such as the universities because those are the ones which can afford to construct dormitories.

Ronquillo reasoned out that the idea of requiring schools to have their own dormitories attracts foreign students because it gives them security.

He said both the school and the students would benefit from it if the dormitory is well managed.

The dormitory could bring income to the institution and, at the same time, would be an advantage to student dormers since it could spare them from the effects of the increasing fuel and commodity prices that resulted to increased transportation fare.

Ronquillo mentioned the University of Cebu and Cebu Doctors’ University as good models of schools with own dormitories.

He said the two universities have dorm masters who monitor the lodgers’ academic performance.

These dorm masters report to the dean the student’s academic status which, in a way, helps the student achieve academic excellence. - Jessica Ann Pareja/LPM
