Mambaling pond water pumped out
The
Acting on the order of Mayor Tomas Osmeña, personnel from the City Engineering Office led by assistant city engineer Carmelita Kenneth Enriquez pumped out the water yesterday afternoon using a sewer inductor.
But Enriquez said the process may last for few days until they totally pump out the knee-deep water where some house posts are submerged.
Mambaling barangay captain Rodolfo Estella, however, said that the pumping out of water is not the best solution to the problem because there is still the possibility that the area will get flooded again when the rain comes.
Residents said the murky pool developed last year when the family of businessman Vincent Go put a riprap and reclaimed their property beside the Mambaling access to the South Road Properties.
When it rains, they said they could not sleep because floodwaters reach as high as the floor of their houses. The reclamation prevents the water from flowing to the sea, they added.
Worse, residents also dispose of their wastewater there. Trash and household wastes are floating on the green and murky water.
Because of this, some children in the area are observed to be sickly and suffering from skin diseases.
Estella said that the barangay had constantly been reminding the residents to clean up their surroundings and dispose of their garbage properly but that residents have also repeatedly ignored the reminders.
Upon reading the newspaper reports yesterday, Osmeña immediately ordered the city engineer’s office to pump out the stagnant water.
Personnel from the City Health Department also visited the area in the afternoon to check the health of the residents.
In his news conference, Osmeña said pumping out the water is immediate but temporary solution while waiting for the property owner to put up the drainage system.
The mayor also said that the Gos had put up a sign telling the residents that they can dump their excess filling materials in the area. — Wenna A. Berondo/MEEV
