The Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center will soon establish its own psychiatric facility for its more than 1,000 inmates.
Byron Garcia, Capitol consultant on security and penology, said that the putting up of such facility was hatched after a Filipino doctor based in the United States proposed this in exchange for scientific studies.
Garcia said that the inmates’ dances are form of therapy from which researchers can get psychological data.
These data will be used in the United States for scientific research and lectures.
US-based doctors will put up a ward complete with equipment and will train specialists to be assigned at the said facility. The provincial government may possibly provide for the salary of the trained specialists, though the proposal has yet to be finalized.
Meanwhile, the 1,500 inmates will have another one-and-a-half non-stop dance show today at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m featuring the 80s hit “We Built This City” by Starship.
The show is for free but donations are welcome.
So far, donations have already reached a total of P2.8 million since they started two years ago. The latest of which were from former Senator Agapito “Butz” Aquino and the Court of First Instance Multipurpose Cooperative, with P150,000 each, or a total of P300,000.
Donations, Garcia said, all go to the individual bank account of the dancing inmates. — Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon/MEEV
