Cops: Students prone to theft
City police director Sr. Supt. Patrocinio Comendador said based on their observations, students are mostly prone to snatchers and not violent robberies.
Comendador said this is because students tend to ignore the environment and what is happening around them because they might have their studies and other more pressing concerns in mind.
Some of them also feel the need to display or show their belongings making them easy prey for snatchers and robbers.
Police are set to give more related data to the city council this April 23 after Vice Mayor Michael Rama asked them to submit a report on petty crimes victimizing students in the city.
This was after the killing of graduating Nursing student Ruby Jade Ruba who was shot dead in a robbery along
Three alleged suspects were arrested five days after the incident and were identified as Aivan Barabat, Mark Anthony Gabriel Labitad and Carl Marx Carticiano. Barabat and Labitad are gang members.
The three have denied the accusations against them and accused the police of torturing them to make them admit to the crime.
On the other hand, Comendador believed that the city is still safe compared to other cities citing yearly reports of increased enrollments in schools by students coming from different provinces. — Edwin Ian Melecio/BRP
