1 killed, 13 injured in Lenten violence

A man was killed while 13 others were injured in six separate incidents happened during the observance of the Lenten holidays up to yesterday morning, police records showed.

Ronaldo Rondina, 34, a caretaker of the Queen City Memorial Gardens in barangay Carreta was found dead inside the cemetery yesterday with several hack wounds on his head and other parts of his body.

The police are now looking for the alleged suspect identified as Antonio Harris Arrogante, 25, a resident of barangay Mabolo, who is also a graveyard caretaker of cemetery.

PO1 Michael Codaste said a bolo, which is believed to be the weapon used in the killing of Rondina, was recovered at the crime scene.

A witness told the police that he saw Arrogante with bloody hands arrive in his house early that day. While he was sitting outside of his house, he saw the suspect ask money from his wife who was tending a small store. After that, the suspect left hurriedly.

Meanwhile, a 23-year-old student and two youngsters, aged 12 and 13, were shot by two unidentified gunmen riding a red motorcycle along the corners of Don Pedro Cui Street and R.R. Landon Street in barangay San Antonio last Friday dawn.

Police identified one of the injured as Raymund Mangubat, 23, a resident of Gorordo Avenue. He was drinking with his friends at the side of the road when the backrider open fired at them.

Mangubat was hit in the right foot, while the two boys who were seated along with them on the pavement were also hit.

The 13-year-old boy was hit in the neck. The other, a 12-year-old, was hit in his left hand. They were all taken to the nearby hospital.

On the other hand, 23-year-old Melvin Pacaña of barangay Guadalupe was hit by a bullet while he was on his way home that afternoon from the Good Shepherd in Banawa.

While the victim was walking downhill, he said he heard a gunshot and saw people scamper to different directions.

He heard another shot and felt something hit him. He then saw blood oozing from his right forearm. Sr. Insp. Aileen Recla of the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Branch and her team, who were on patrol near the area, rushed Pacaña to the hospital.

While the team from the Theft and Robbery Section led by Sr. Insp. Michael Anthony Bastes who also heard the gunshots immediately proceeded to the area and apprehended a suspicious-looking man and two minors running.

Jovy Guisuna, 22, of barangay Tisa denied involvement in the shooting. The two boys, aged 14, claimed that they were mistakenly arrested. They said they were actually running away from trouble.

Recla told The FREEMAN that there were people who claimed seeing one of the 14-year-old boys they have apprehended shoot youngsters clad in black, but that they are afraid to testify. Even the victim could not positively identify the perpetrators as he only heard gunshots, police said.

Minutes later, another stabbing and mauling incident took place not far from where the shooting happened. A 14-year-old boy who was with his friends got mauled and stabbed by a group of youngster believed to be members of a gang.

Police said the perpetrators asked the victim and his companions if they are members of the Crips gang. Before they could even answer, the group started mauling them.

Also, a fish laborer at the Pasil Fishport in barangay Suba landed at the Cebu City Medical Center after he was stabbed several times by another laborer past 7 p.m.

Junjie Paso, 19, was sitting at the side of the road when the suspect Eljun Laborte, 19, appeared and without a word stabbed him several times, hitting him in the different parts of his body. It was learned that Laborte harbored a grudge against Paso for a rift in the past.

The suspect fled while the victim was taken to the hospital.

In another stabbing incident Friday evening, father and son Calixto Presbitero, 52 and Alfie 23, both landed at the CCMC after being attacked by their neighbors in sitio Caduloy, barangay Tisa.

Police said the victims were having a conversation outside of their house when one of the suspects, Noli Luna, 33, approached them. A heated argument ensued.

Noli’s relatives identified as Ramil Luna, 36; Vicente Luna, 25; and Diosdado Luna, 54, heard the commotion and then attacked the Presbiteros. — Edwin Ian Melecio/MEEV
