Possible dengue breeding site seen near post office

-

City health officials are destroying breeding sites of mosquitoes as one way to minimize the rise of dengue cases in Cebu City, but one such site can be found just a short distance from city hall and in front of a government building no less.

For the past several months, the people transacting business at the Cebu City Post Office beside Fort San Pedro in Plaza Independencia have been complaining that the area in front of the post office is not passable due to the stagnant water coming from a defective drainage system.

“Dugay na kaayo ni nga problemaha nga wala g’yod matagad. Maglunop diri kon mag-uwan ug ang tubig dili mohubas kay dili na man makaagas sa drainage system,” a postal employee said.

San Roque barangay captain Roger Ruizo said he wants to talk with the Cebu City postmaster tomorrow to solve the problem because the area is still part of his territorial jurisdiction.

The pool of dirty stagnant water in front of the post office is about four inches deep.

“Kuyawan mi dinhi nga kon dili kini ma-repair ang mi-clog up nga drainage system, basin managhan ang mga lamok og mangasakit mi’g dengue,” said Dante Loremas, one of the residents near the post office.

In Cebu City, the health officials announced that the number of dengue cases for the first two months have already reached more than 300, and 12 persons, mostly children, have died of the disease.   Rene U. Borromeo/BRP
