In a regionwide report, six HIV/AIDS cases were recorded this year compared to only one case last year.
Of these six new cases, it was confirmed that four of them are males while the other two are females. Two of them are living as a couple, another two are overseas Filipino workers, while the others are a homosexual and a commercial sex worker.
Dr. Jonathan Neil Erasmo of the DOH reiterated that there is no cure yet for the virus, but a series of medical treatment may slow down the rate at which HIV weakens the immune system. He reminds sexually active individuals to practice safe sex in order to prevent themselves from contracting the virus.
In the entire country, from January 1984 to August 2003, HIV/AIDS cases reached 1,921 with over 300 cases added for this year alone. Of these reported HIV/AIDS cases, 255 were already dead due to AIDS-related complications.
Most victims range from 20 to 39 years old. Sixty-two percent of the victims are men. Thirty percent are OFWs. Heterosexual contact proved to be the most common mode of transmission. Blood and blood product transfusion, needle prick injuries, and pre-natal cases are among the other common ways of transmitting HIV/AIDS.
HIV/AIDS cases worldwide already reached 42 million. The Sub-Saharan Africa has the most number of victims with 29.4 million.
