Council wants detailed report on students’  NAT Performance

The Cebu City Council yesterday asked the Department of Education to submit a detailed report on the performance of the students, especially in the National Achievement Test.

Likewise, members of the legislative body want the education department to appraise them on the problems/deficiencies that it is facing so the city government can help address these.

This developed after Cebu City Commission for the Welfare and Protection of Children co-chairperson Margot Osmeña included in her reports the performance of the city’s public elementary and high school students in the national achievement test.

The city’s first lady delivered her “State of the Children Address” before the City Council during its regular session yesterday.

She said that from 51.29 percent in 2005, achievement test passers for the elementary level went up to 55.76 percent in 2006. For the high school level, from 47.8 percent in 2005 the number of achievement test passers rose to 52.79 in 2006.

While the performances of students in both high school and elementary levels in the achievement tests have increased, Margot said that more should still be done to improve it further.

The City Council took opportunity of the presence of Cebu City Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Lorna Rances and other education officials who were present during the session to listen to Margot’s reports. Officials of the City Health Office were also around for the SOCA.

Councilor Edgardo Labella said that officials of DepEd-Cebu City should take note of the performance of the students in the achievement tests and the number of students who dropped out of school.

With this, councilor Gerardo Carillo, chairman of the committee on education of the City Council moved to request the DepEd to submit a detailed report on the performance of the elementary and high school students in the national achievement test, including the number of students who dropped out of school. — Wenna A.
