BFAD probes candy poisoning

Officials of the Bureau of Food and Drugs-7, headed by Monina Coyoca, yesterday went to check on the alleged food poisoning incident that downed 23 kids in Madridejos town, Bantayan Island earlier reported to have eaten “Ube Milk Candy” from China.

Coyoca said that they will take samples of the said candy. Through laboratory tests they would be able to find out if this has really caused the food poisoning.

She also said that they could not determine yet if said Ube Milk Candy manufactured by Shinto City Maotung Food Company in Guandong, China is one of those Chinese sweets being pulled out from the Philippine market.

Because of the incident, town officials of Madridejos have banned all candies made from China in their place.

According to Mayor Salvador dela Fuente, the said ban has been issued through a resolution that the Council has passed.

Aside from issuing a resolution, Dela Fuente said that they will also be asking from BFAD a copy of the prohibited products from China to ensure the safety of the public and avoid a repeat of said incident.
