Saavedra lauds new Visayas Ombudsman

-

Whistle-blower Crisologo Saavedra expressed full trust and confidence that the ongoing investigation into the alleged anomalies in the various projects for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit will not be compromised under the watch of the newly appointed Deputy Ombudsman for the Visayas Pelagio Apostol.

Saavedra said Apostol’s appointment is an added boost to the campaign against corruption in Cebu because he is known to be upright. Saavedra also admitted that while he is sad for director Virginia Palanca-Santiago he is also happy she did not get the position because she can now focus on the investigation into the controversial ASEAN Summit-related projects.

Apostol’s appointment was announced by President Gloria Arroyo during her last visit to Cebu. Apostol, however, has yet to formally assume his position as he is still abroad.

He is expected to formally assume the position within the week as soon as the needed papers are completed.

The president said she signed Apostol’s appointment three weeks ago and he is expected to formally assume office as soon as his appointment will be formally announced by Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita.

Aside from Santiago, other applicants included on the shortlist were graft investigator Carla Tangco and Regional Trial Court judge Simeon Dumdum.  Fred P. Languido/BRP
