Sheriff survives ambush after Sibonga Demolition

A sheriff of one of the branches of the Regional Trial Court in Cebu City survived an ambush in sitio Ikan, barangay Bato, Sibonga town, after he saw to the execution of a demolition order.

Elcid Caballes, 42, was in Sibonga town last Friday to assist the demolition team sent to sitio Catap, barangay Banlot, Sibonga, to demolish 26 houses after the court determined that the lot they occupied was rightfully owned by a certain Segundina Caban.

SPO3 Rudilito Carillo, who served as Caballes’ security escort, said that after the demolition of four houses they decided to stop and resume on Monday.

While they were following the vehicle of the demolition team back to the Sibonga police station, several men fired at the green Nissan Urvan they were riding when they passed sitio Catap, barangay Banlot.

Caballes and Carillo got out of the vehicle and returned fire at the men who then escaped.

A team of the Regional Mobile Group-7 who tailed them failed to arrest the men when they came to the aid of the sheriff.

Carillo believes the incident has something to do with the demolition in barangay Banlot. —Flor Z. Perolina/BRP
