Couple killed in motorcycle crash

A couple was killed after their motorcycle lost control and slammed into the center island along UN Avenue near the foot of the Marcelo Fernan Bridge in Mandaue City yesterday dawn.

Traffic investigators identified the fatalities as Ryan Mahinay Sanchez, and his wife Loida, residents of sitio Sampaguita, barangay Lamac, Consolacion town.

According to SPO1 Joel Catabas of the Traffic Division of the Mandaue City Police Office, the couple were on their way to Global Wear Manufacturing Inc. at the Mactan Export Processing Zone where Loida works when the accident happened.

Catabas said witnesses reported the motorcycle driven by Ryan suddenly lost control, hit the center island and went on to slam into one of the controversial lampposts.

The couple was thrown off the motorcycle, Ryan landed headfirst on the concrete and killed instantly.  Loida was rushed by the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation to Mactan Doctor’s Hospital where she died a few minutes later.

Catabas told reporters that Ryan could have been sleepy at that time and failed to notice the center island ahead of them.— Edwin Ian Melecio/BRP
