Crime volunteer slain with grenade
October 6, 2006 | 12:00am
An anti-crime group volunteer was killed after a man threw a grenade at him and shot him in barangay Cantuod, Balamban town, late Wednesday night.
Agosto Togonon, 44, had just arrived home on his motorcycle with his wife Crispina, 47, and their eight-year old daughter from the public market of the town where he helped secure the fiesta.
He was parking the motorcycle when a man hurled a grenade at him. Police believe Togonon was killed by shrapnel from the explosion, but the assailant still shot him with a .45 cal. pistol in the forehead and the back of his head.
Togonon's wife and daughter were also hit and injured by shrapnel as well as his son Ronel and his live-in partner Jeska who were already sleeping at the time. They were brought to Balamban District Hospital for treatment.
Recovered from the crime scene were three slugs and two empty shells of a .45 cal.
Balamban police investigator PO2 Cesar Climaco said there are two men involved in the incident, one of them threw the grenade while the other served as lookout.
Climaco said that the victim was a target of criminals because aside from helping police secure the town's events he was also a police informant and kept an eye on some illegal activities in his barangay.
"Posibleng ang paghatag og information ani niya namo maoy hinungdan sa pagpatay kay active man ni siya kaayo nga mohatag og info namo gud, posibleng naay nabangaan nga dagko mao to," Climaco said. -Norvie S. Misa/BRP
