This developed after representatives from the shipping vessel like Capt. Arturo Varela - Operations Division manager of said maritime company and Capt. Enrique Gepilano III - company security officer, with school officials like Capt. Emerico Gepilano - dean of the UV Maritime College, including other officers of the agency, and Japanese representative Kondo Makoto of Shoei Kisen Kaisha paid a visit at the office of UV assistant vice president Joselito "Jiji" Gullas last Tuesday.
Capt. Emerico Gepilano said if students pass the examination conducted by the shipping company last Tuesday, they will be assured of employment aboard the Japanese shipping vessels in both deck and engine areas and will receive attractive compensation packages.
Varela said that within a span of over five years, they have been granting slots to Filipinos as almost everybody onboard their fleet of 23 vessels, sailing around the world, is a Filipino.
"Most of our veteran crew in the Japanese vessels are graduates of the University of the Visayas," Varela emphasized. - Garry B. Lao
