June 30, 2006 | 12:00am
Following the city council committee on laws' recommendation, Talisay City is set to approve a proposed ordinance on Comprehensive Waste Management System soon.
The committee, in its Facts and Findings report to the council, said the ordinance will specifically provide the objectives, waste and storage regulations, waste processing and resource recovery, collection and transportation of solid wastes, disposal of solid wastes, prohibited acts and the corresponding fines and penalties for the violation thereof.
"This ordinance does not only intend to inform the general public about the proper way of disposing garbage but to create an awareness as well with respect to the protection, preservation and conservation of the ecosystem for the promotion of public health and safety," the report submitted to the City Council last June 22, said. Committee chairman Councilor Richel Bacaltos signed the report.
The city's sanitary landfill, in compliance with the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act, is almost finished.
As soon as the ordinance is approved, neighboring towns, which had signified their intention to dispose of their garbage in the city, would be accommodated if the city council indicates in this ordinance. - Liv G. Campo
