Protests to mar Independence Day observance

The observance of Independence Day on Monday will be marred by a series of mass protests by militant groups.

Jaime Paglinawan, Bayan-Cebu chapter chairman, said they are expecting thousands of protesters to gather at the Fuente Osmeña around 8:00 a.m. in time for the Ecumenical Mass to kick off their activity.

After the Mass, the group will be joined by other groups at the Gaisano Metro from where they will proceed to the Malacañang sa Sugbu.

During their protest actions, Paglinawan said they would air their sentiments in opposing to the government's move to change the Charter and in calling for the President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's ouster.

"Tungod sa iyang tumong na magpabilin sa gahom ug sa iyang pagka-itoy-itoy sa mga langyaw, maluibong ibaligya ni Arroyo and soberinya ug bahandi sa nasud ngadto sa mga langyawng interes pinaagi sa giduso nga charter change," Paglinawan said.

Among those joining the rally are Bayan Muna, Gabriella, League of Filipino Students, Karapatan, Anakbayan and other militant organizations. - Jasmin R. Uy
