Lumad Basakanon bags title plus P1M in Aliwan festival

-
Lumad Basakanon brought pride to the Cebuano community when it was adjudged grand champion last Saturday in this year's Aliwan Festival held in Manila.

The Lumad Basakanon of Cebu City, that bagged several championship titles in this year's Sinulog Mardi Gras, was the official representative of Region VII to compete with other groups from different regions in the dance contest.

The Aliwan festival is an annual cultural event that brings together almost all major festivals from various regions of the country. The festival was spearheaded by Manila Broadcasting Company, together with the cities of Manila and Pasay and the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

Former councilor George Rama, the head delegate of the Lumad Basakanon, said that there were 28 participating contingents and that they were the last performer to compete in the national championship, which kicked off from April 27 and culminated last April 29.

Aside from the prestige, the group received P1 million, Rama said.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña said he will endorse to the city council the passing of a resolution declaring the Lumad Basakanon of barangay Basak as the official dance troupe of Cebu City.

Osmeña added that the Lumad Basakanon will represent Cebu City in all cultural events nationwide, giving significance to the promotion of the Sinulog festivity.

Lumad Basakanon first joined the Sinulog Mardi Gras in 1991 and won top prize in the barangay division.

In 2005, the group was adjudged grand champion in the Free Interpretation category. They also bagged the Best in Costume and Best in Musicality awards.

However, in 2006, the Lumad Basakanon failed to grab a spot in the Free Interpretation category, but landed first in the street-dancing category.

Through the years, talents were discovered. Most importantly, the group served as an avenue for young people to engage in activities that proved effective in keeping them away from drugs and other vices, Rama said. - Garry B. Lao
